One of my family's favorite places to vacation is Branson, MO.
This is the view from the deck of our favorite condo to stay at on Table Rock Lake.

Branson's got the best of both outdoor adventure and the entertainment world. I think the entertainment aspect is a really good choice for people who don't want to be immersed in somewhere as chaotic as New York, but still have availability to great shows (I highly suggest Sight & Sound Theatres), and also fun activities like go-karting, water parks, zip-lining, the giant slingshot, and much more. P.S. Please do not read maps while you drive.

Our favorite place to stay is The Village at Indian Point. This place has such a cozy log cabin atmosphere, set right on a peninsula on Table Rock Lake. Everything is so nice and accommodating, and it truly is an enjoyable place to stay. The condos are owned by people who don't live there 365 days a year, and so they are booked out like hotel rooms when available.
My parents are in their 40's, I'm in my teens, and my brother is a tween. We all enjoy it here - it is perfect for family's - especially those who adore nature and the lake life.

The Indian Point peninsula has a lot of character. There are a good amount of resorts, little Ma & Pa restaurants and stores, a hippy campground, and lots of lake access. Our resort has it's own dock, but we usually go down to the Indian Point Marina & Boat Dock. There is a floating restaurant (where you can also buy fish food to feed the huge mass of carp in the water), lots of boat docks, an amazing view for sunsets, and a really pretty shoreline.
We have fished at a couple spots on the peninsula, but to the left of the marina is our favorite.
